Books to Sierra Leone
The Sisters collected library and textbooks no longer in use from local schools in Math, Science, Language Arts, Social Studies and other subjects. These books were stored in a facility in Prince William County until enough were accumulated to almost fill it to capacity. One Saturday morning, the group met along with some of their children to sort, insert bookplates, box and label the books in preparation for shipping them to Sierra Leone. They were then picked up and shipped out to schools that did not have sufficient resources.
Microscopes to Virgin Islands and to Mississippi high schools
Upon learning that the a local school district was upgrading from the manual microscopes used in biology classes to electronic scopes, one of the sisters made arrangements for the perfect conditioned and usable equipment to be donated to SUIS. They were stored in a storage facility rented by SUIS, and later boxed, labeled and shipped to high schools in the United States Virgin Islands and to a high school in Mississippi that did not have any working microscopes.
Contributions and Beautification of ACTS Facilities
The Sisters spent time over several years, working to support the needs of the ACTS Emergency Assistance program and facilities. ACTS provides basic essential support to women and children who are experiencing crisis. Some of the activities included refurbishing an apartment by painting, replacing worn furnishings, donating towels and linens, upgrading kitchen appliances and supplies, and designing and creating wreaths for the doors for each apartment. In addition, SUIS members restocked basic supplies that included laundry baskets filled with mops, brooms, cleaning supplies, laundry supplies and more, for each apartment as it was vacated and prior to a new family moving in. At Christmas time, Sisters gathered to fill Christmas stockings with toys, treats and school supplies for children who were residing in the temporary quarters.
SHARE Program
The ladies of SUIS contributed to the SHARE program at Emmanuel AME Church for several years. Their contribution to SHARE (Self Help and Resource Exchange) was used to purchase food for one family of 4-6 members each month ex. November (Thanksgiving) a family received a turkey, w/all trimmings, ham, breakfast meats, fresh fruit, vegetables, pumpkin pie and or ingredients to make dessert. A member of the family came to Emmanuel AME on the designated Saturday to pick up the bags of food. The menu for SHARE changed each month and the cost was $19-21 each month. Emmanuel AME only has SHARE during the months of November and December. We are a center for the Fredericksburg Food Bank.
School Supplies and clothing to Mozambique
For several years, the members of SUIS purchased clothing and school supplies, boxed them up and shipped them to an orphanage in Mozambique. Many of the children in this orphanage were HIV positive and had parents who had died from the AIDS virus. In addition, frequent travelers in the group, collected soaps, shampoos and lotions and other good hygiene supplies from the hotel rooms and shipped them to the orphanage. Hotel soaps were typically a perfect size for little hands and the small bottles of shampoo and lotions were a good match for use by younger children.
Supporting Various Scholarship funds
Over the years, SUIS members have donated to a variety of scholarship funds to help young people attend college. SUIS does not sponsor fundraisers or sponsor any activities that generate revenue. All donations are given by the members.
